Going for Broke?

Epiphany on stop over in Vegas. I must be getting old. For me, travel = paying obscene amounts of money to cobble together some semblance of my mundane daily routine in Eugene/Boston. Raiding my receipts...
  • $16 fruit cup breakfast at cafe in Wynn... in hermetically sealed plastic, unbussable container
  • $7 almost-but-not-quite a Starbucks peppermint mocha (alternately, having Starbucks card rejected @ Starbucks in the mall) Belaggio/Caesar's/Mandalay Bay
  • $158 mani/pedi/massage... wasn't I just doing this last Saturday?
  • $50 (and 5+ miles of walking in desert conditions) non-tabloid piece of reading material @ Fashion Show Mall
  • $26 on demand movies... unfortunately, the Tudors was not available
  • $7 shampoo/conditioner/soap of choice
All the while, riddled with Vagabonding Fail for being hell-bent on preserving the status quo and allowing myself to be bugged by the reproachful glances cab drivers, aestheticians, baristas, etc. they trojan into the innocuous, "Are you here with your boyfriend?"

That said, Fail was punctuated with some authentic moments (as defined by Joseph Pine)... usually multi-player...
  • Spotting an acquaintance from GDC at BlackHat
  • Finding $2 ice cream, free bottled water, and friendly conversation at a diner on the strip
  • Getting the most awesome massage ever
  • Braving the Riviera pool + sharing 'screen with DC chixors (they do exist) + taking my legs to a slightly less embarrassing shade of pale
  • Passing a chick wearing the exact same 3 yr old top as me
  • Getting awesome Gaiman book recommendations from the Borders express cashier 13 mins before closing
  • Discovering I can walk from Treasure Island to Riviera without dying of exposure
  • Learning how to recover a lost 2 week old iPhone
  • Booking transit in foreign country in an airport less than 10 hours before arrival (take that Potts!)
  • Seeing Ka in all of its over the top glory
  • Splitting a cab with a stranger
  • Checking out the awesome work done by a revolutionary Vegas food bank
