Laptop Makeover and 7 iGoogle Widget Reviews

Mix the post-finals urge to return to humanity (eat, sleep, exercise) with the spring cleaning itch and I have given my electronic space a much needed makeover.
  • Wallpaper:  Vanilla "Think Americas map" has given way to campfire.  While the hours I spent surfing through google images hugely therapeutic, the more time strapped might appreciate these hacks.  Long lost GTD wallpaper!  gCal as wallpaper!
  • Google Reader:  This started out as a major spring cleaning of bookmarks and the realization that the vast majority of them were blogs.
  • iGoogle:  First I prettied it up with a Serengeti Sunset theme, then brought the social productivity with widgets like:

Headline News on Google maps
Like:  uber scannable current events that let you zoom in for local content
Gripes:  few-- press coverage appears to be uneven at a state level
Like: uber scannable and updateable
Gripes: I'm not a twitterati, so it's tricky for me to exit out of a second guessed tweet or manage account settings.

Google Reader (see above)
Like: uber scannable and way more intriguing than staring at the back of the cereal box over breakfast... has a read offline feature that's conceptually appealing, have yet to test drive
Gripes:  Google reader autoenrolled me in this glut of news applications that clogged the initial feed.  The popup window is nice, but configured to require too much scrolling to access and exit the post
Like: team documents are one click deep instead of the ~10 or so before
Gripes: google documents is still really kludgy and hard to organize across multiple projects
Like: fantastic at tracking jet setting consulting colleagues and MBAs on breaks without having to remember the minutae of their schedules
Gripes:  Needs a lot more help with the installed userbase.  I couldn't even find a way to search my gmail contacts for folks who've downloaded the application.
Like: umbrella?  no umbrella?  Surprise people by bringing up their local weather conditions
Gripe:  load more than one city in this thing and it becomes a scroll behometh, throwing pertinent content below the fold
Like: sound knowledgeable about "the game" and time calls accordingly
Gripe:  not a full compliment of sports included.  Has an uncanny knack for auto opening on a sport that's out of season.

Next up... 30 Day GTD challenge lite..  and the hunt for the perfect IM consolidator...
